About this Session
In this seminar, we will dip into what Bonnie Friedman calls the “emotional side of the writer’s life.” Why? Because tapping into the joy of language is a head and heart exercise. We will begin by creating a portrait (no drawing skills needed) of our present-day and writer selves. After falling in love with ourselves, we will wake up to our characters and invite our stories in through prompts and free writing exercises. This is meant to help you generate new ideas or relight the spark for existing work.
We will draw our inspiration from Friedman’s book “Writing Past Dark” and notes on process and creation from other writers, including Kiese Laymon, Ocean Vuong, Amanda Gorman, and Vivian Gornick. This seminar, while open to all genres and levels, may be of special interest to literary nonfiction and fiction writers and writers who are in the early stages of their journey.
GrubStreet Vaccine Protocol
We are so excited to begin welcoming students into our new home at 50 Liberty Dr. in Boston this Fall! In our new building, proof of vaccination against COVID-19 will be required for everyone visiting the second floor, where all classes will be held. This means that all students must be vaccinated against COVID-19 to take classes with us in-person. Please submit your proof of vaccination here at least 48 hours before your class begins. If you are not able to fill out our vaccination form 48 hours before your class begins, please bring your vaccine card (or a photo of it) with you to the building. Please note that if you arrive for class and you have not filled out the form and do not have proof of vaccination with you, you will not be allowed to participate in the class. And don’t forget your mask! In accordance with the City of Boston, masks will be required at all times while inside the building.
