Revising Your Novel: Creative and Practical Strategies

Class Description

Your first (or second, or fourteenth) draft is finally finished. Manuscript pages, boxes of workshop critique, and a thousand to-do lists cover your desk. How do you approach it? Where is that great scene, again? Does your dialogue work? Should you switch the whole thing to third person? Revision can be overwhelming. Structural techniques and tools—ranging from helpful computer shortcuts and tricks, to editing checklists, to a judicious use of your three-hole-punch—can help marry the left and right sides of your brain. This class will cover three areas of revision: concrete organizational ideas; strategies for reading and editing your own work; and managing and editing manuscripts digitally. We’ll also discuss how to evaluate and incorporate critique, and work on in-class exercises designed to help sharpen your revision techniques. You'll leave with revision and editing strategies, suggested readings, and examples of computer-generated tools. Bring your computer to class, and, if you have them, a synopsis and outline of your novel.
