Retelling the Classics

Class Description

Attempting to retell a classic story may be daunting, but can be a tremendous amount of fun. Imagine re-telling a beloved story or play from another character's perspective or how certain characters and plots would fare in the present day. The classic novel, Pride and Prejudice, has been re-told and re-told again. Ayesha at Last by Uzma Jalaluddin tells Pride and Prejudice in a present-day Muslim community. Pride: A Pride and Prejudice Remix by Ibi Zoboi is the story told from the point of view of a young woman in present day Bronx, NY. Those are just two examples. Jane Eyre, King Lear, and The Age of Innocence have all been re-told in imaginative ways. If you have an idea or would like to explore ideas, this seminar is for you.

Bring examples of your favorite re-tellings and we will warm-up by getting to know classics in new ways. We will engage in activities designed to generate ideas and leave with a solid concept for a re-telling.

Class Format

This class will take place using Zoom videoconferencing. About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting!

Scholarship Information

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
