Class Description

What is a flash essay? It’s not just a shorter essay; there's a formula to a flash essay, and the secret sauce is heat. Heat is the part of your piece that makes readers pay attention. It’s the part that answers the question “what is this essay about?” If you are interested in finding out the 3-ingredient recipe and writing an essay that is guaranteed to surprise even you, this class is one you cannot miss. You will leave with an understanding of what flash writing is all about, and the draft of an essay that packs a punch in under 800 words.

In this seminar, we’ll poke around the websites of literary magazines such as Brevity Magazine, and others. Based on class interest and spontaneity we’ll read a few aloud. This majority of class will be craft discussion on flash essays, writing via prompts, and sharing.

This class is for all levels of creative nonfiction and personal essay writers.
