Class Description

This session is part of GrubStreet's Manuscript Month, a programming deep dive into the publishing journey. Learn more about Manuscript Month here!
Have you ever wondered how publishing actually works? Are you sitting on a manuscript, but unsure what to do with it next? Confused by the differences between traditional and self-publishing?
In this presentation by Vermont indie publisher Onion River Press, we'll walk you through the ins-and-outs of publishing, from self- to hybrid to traditional. We'll explore key information you should know as an aspiring author, including: how to query an agent, the pros and cons of doing it yourself, and common publishing scams to look out for. We'll also examine why certain genres flourish in different markets and when you might want to choose an indie path over a traditional one. Whether you're writing romance, literary fiction, or children’s books, you'll leave with a solid understanding of how publishing works and what your next steps might be.
There will also be plenty of time for questions to address specific concerns around individual projects, and everyone will leave with a flow-graph handout designed to help you better decide your next steps. Whether you're a seasoned writer or just dipping your toes into the world of publishing, this course will give you an insider’s view of how the publishing world works and where might be the best home for your book.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
