Class Description
Not many people would start a road trip without a destination, but writers often start writing without any plan at all. This might be because they fear an outline will stifle their creativity or they think it has to be exhaustive or because they just haven’t found a good way to think through their work ahead of time. Not using an outline can lead to writing in circles, abandoned work, and frustration. In this seminar, participants will walk through a series of examples of writing outlines and plans, each using different tools including everything from emojis and colored post-it notes to sortable spreadsheets. We will talk about why writers both love and hate outlines and how to customize them to your preferences.
By the end of the session, writers will have begun designing a format for their own personal writing roadmap. This class is geared toward prose writers of any genre.
This class will be hosted using live Zoom meetings! You will be able to participate in class via Zoom videoconference from wherever you’re most comfortable. All you’ll need is a laptop or a phone! About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting via Zoom–no need to download anything or sign up for Zoom in advance! Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
