Class Description

For many years, publishing functioned in a fairly straightforward way—get an agent, sell your book—with self-publishing, or "vanity publishing," often seen as a last or alternate resort. But with shifting markets, publishing houses in flux, and new technologies such as POD printing and the rise of the e-book, self-publishing and hybrid presses have become a more viable option for writers of all genres, particularly to kickstart their careers.
This presentation will walk you through the pros and cons of traditional vs. self-publishing, as well as how your larger goals, platforms, and specific genres can help trace your path toward publication. We'll look at what genres are thriving in what markets, when it makes sense to get an agent, scams to watch out for, and much more. Expect to leave this session with enough information to form a clearer idea of what might work best for you, and what your next steps toward publication could look like.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
