Making a Scene—How to build compelling stories with intention

No Longer Enrolling

Class Description

Scenes are the basic building blocks of plot. Well-written scenes create an emotional connection for the reader by making characters and events seem real, and by giving characters recognizable, yet complex emotions. Every scene ought to serve more than one purpose—develop characters, solve problems, resolve issues, tee-up conflict, etc… The more of these purposes you embed into each scene, the higher the stakes/tension/conflict.

In this all-day workshop, you’ll learn how to start and end scenes effectively, as well as play with tricks for creating narrative drive, moving the story forward toward a full arc. Together we’ll read examples of effective scenes and you’ll have the chance to practice using some visual methods for writing and structuring scenes that are useful at the outlining and first-draft-writing stages.
