Class Description

The Grub Book Club offers a chance to read and discuss great books with a focus on reading from a writer's perspective. The book club's next pick is the short story collection The News From Spain: Seven Variations on a Love Story by Joan Wickersham. A GrubStreet instructor will lead a discussion on The News From Spain for the first hour, and we'll then be joined by author Joan Wickersham for an informal Q&A about her collection.

“An ode to heartbreak and regret. . .Wickersham's gift is for capturing the habits of mind that lead even smart people to deceive themselves...her book makes you slow down and listen, and then watch for people to reveal themselves.” – New York Times Book Review

“Elegantly structured, emotionally compelling…Wickersham dissects the human heart with precision and restraint that make her work all the more moving. Short stories don’t get much better than this.” – Kirkus Reviews, Best Books of 2012

Must be a current Grub Street member to attend, and members are invited to bring friends.

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
