Class Description

Got a finished novel? Ready to sign that killer book deal? First, you need an agent. Agents are the gatekeepers to traditional publishers, and today, they receive hundreds of inquiries a week. To stand out among this fierce competition, three things are vital: an enticing query, a concise synopsis, and a whopper of a first page. In this class, you’ll learn the structure and key elements of these three pieces of the query submission package. We'll dissect successful examples of all three and discuss how you can apply these techniques to your own queries, synopses, and first pages. Come to class with a draft of a query, synopsis, and first page of your current work in progress. In class, you will rework these pieces and have the chance to receive feedback from your peers and the instructor. You’ll leave with the knowledge and tools you need to revise and hone your query submission package, ready to begin your agent search. At the end of class, the instructor will answer your questions about the process of searching for an agent and negotiating the publishing industry in general.
