Class Description
As forest fires rage, mega-storms batter coastal cities, and famines flare into wars, what can we learn from apocalyptic writers who have gone before us? How can we write about our own time of transitions, full as it is of endings but also beginnings? And how can we channel our grief, rage, and love into calls for change and justice?
In this generator we will use prompts to start first drafts, sharing some with the class. We will also read apocalyptic poetry by writers like Franny Choi, Brenda Shaughnessy, Imtiaz Dharker, and Joy Harjo, paying close attention to their craft choices and how they connect their own time to the future. Poets should expect to leave with three potential starts to poems.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
