Class Description
Increasing diversity of every kind is transforming the world of writing and the classroom. As a result, issues of identity and power have become increasingly important. In this seminar, designed exclusively for GrubStreet instructors, you will have an opportunity to learn more about our current cultural environment and the shifting political, social, and demographic realities we should all keep in mind when teaching creative writing. Through lecture and group discussion, we’ll explore particular strategies to navigate a diverse student body and leverage the power that these voices have in making workshops a more dynamic and inclusive experience. These sessions will be highly interactive, leaving you with real tools and ideas for making your classes brave, rich, and vibrant spaces. Come to one or both!
Session 1: Building Better Spaces
Examine the current cultural shifts happening in America and what they mean for writing and teaching. Building on that knowledge, we will workshop strategies for making your class space inclusive for students of any identity and background.
Session 2: The Power of Voice
Diversity can bring new perspectives and fresh ideas to a class. We’ll discuss how to develop teaching strategies and class activities that leverage the diversity in your workshops and enable students to safely bring their identity and experiences into your classroom.
NOTE: If your example is of a student’s work, please do not include the student’s name or any other identifying information to respect their privacy. This seminar is ONLY for Grub instructors.
Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
