Class Description

Sure, it’s nice to wear your pee-jays to work, but that hardly makes the writer’s job easy. Writers must contend with daily frustrations, frequent rejections, hurtful comments, loneliness, recurring self-doubts, and crises of faith—not to mention a notable lack of remuneration! It’s no surprise that many writers—even wildly talented, well-schooled ones—drop out of the game somewhere along the way. How to hang in there over a lifetime—and (mostly) enjoy the run—that’s the focus of this 3 hour workshop.

Through structured dialogues and tailored writing exercises, students will have the opportunity to identify those often barely conscious thoughts that impede productivity. We’ll then move onto to sharing our collective wisdom about strategies, tools, tricks, and habits of mind and life that help us tame our egos, build confidence and humility, get us unstuck, and enable us to persist in the marathon that writing is.

To prepare, students might want to look at The 7 Secrets of the Prolific by Grub Street’s own Hillary Rettig.

Scholarships Format/Location

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
