Class Description
Acknowledged today as a visionary feminist theorist, bell hooks explored the meaning and nature of love in her poetry as well. Her craft came from a place seeking the communion of radical truth, confidence, and vulnerability. This search forms the core of her poetry and prose; as she wrote: "in love / there are no closed doors / each threshold / an invitation..."
This workshop opens the door for participants who want to write poems about their own personal meaning of love with the help of a cherished ancestral guide. We will read excerpts from Communion: The Female Search for Love and When Angels Speak of Love, her book of poems. The class will also include meditative and somatic practices to help ground our writing in the lived experience of our bodies. Through these and other generative exercises, participants will create poems (in verse or prose) from the stuff of memory, dreams, and their most profound selves. By the end of the workshop, participants will have grown in their confidence as poets through truth and vulnerability.
This workshop is open to any poetic style, and designed for those who want to define their approach to the craft on their own terms.
Class Format
This class will take place using Zoom videoconferencing. About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting!
Scholarship Information
Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
