Writing in Response: Online
All writers need stimulation, but sometimes fresh catalysts can be hard to come by. Whether you’re an experienced writer craving innovation or a new writer hoping for a simple way in, this class is for you!
In this six-week class, we will use specific topics as a jumping off point for our own writing, with a week each on food, music, film, architecture, visual art, and news. Each week, we will bring in and write about our examples of each (for example, each bringing in an image or description of a meal) and then write in response to such examples with new and varied prompts all based flexibly around the topic and bringing in a new form (e.g., writing about food, as well as writing in the form of a restaurant review, not necessarily a restaurant). We will read poems, stories, and essays that engage with these categories in a wild range of ways, including from Susan Choi, Sadiya Hartman, Morgan Parker, Aisha Sabatini Sloan, and Charles Yu. Twice during the class, you will have the opportunity to submit your work for feedback from the class.
You will come out of the course will six new pieces, and a more expansive perspective on how and why we write. This class is open to writers of all genres and styles.
*NOTE that while our handy dandy "Schedule" tab states a 6-7pm class time, there are actually no live meetings for this class! Weekly lessons and assignments open each Wednesday. Students will receive an invitation to Wet Ink, our online class platform, before 5pm on the first day of class.
Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button.
