In this class, we'll learn about writing letters to elected officials and letters to the editor. When do you write to your elected representatives if you want to make a difference, and how do you write if you want to be effective? Is it even worth your time to write at all? How do you write a letter to the editor so that it will stand out from other letters? We’ll address these questions as we dissect both types of letters and discuss the elements and strategies that can help you make a difference. A writing exercise will be part of the class.

Writing for Advocacy Summer Series
How can you best employ the written word to influence decision-makers in today’s unprecedented political climate? In four related seminars, we’ll explore the components of different forms of political writing for both writers and everyday citizens looking to change their corners of the world. Are letters to elected officials worth sending, and if so, what should they include—and what should they leave out? How do you use a personal story in an op-ed? What are talking points and what do you do with them? This series will walk you through some frameworks and provide tools for various types of writing for public advocacy, as well offer ideas for ways to amplify your voice after you’ve finished writing. Students should arrive with an issue or topic they would like to write about in mind. (In-depth knowledge of the issue, while helpful, isn’t necessary; interest and a willingness to learn are the only requirements.) In-class writing and sharing will be part of the class series.

This class will be hosted using live Zoom meetings! You will be able to participate in class via Zoom videoconference from wherever you’re most comfortable. All you’ll need is a laptop or a phone! About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting via Zoom–no need to download anything or sign up for Zoom in advance!
