Ever wonder what goes into writing and publishing a picture book? Have an idea you’d like to develop and get out there? This full-day class will be divided into two sections. In the morning, we’ll look at basic craft elements, including story arc, character, language, and the relationship of words and pictures. We’ll study some examples from the literature and take a behind-the-scenes peek into the instructor’s own publishing journey. In the afternoon, we’ll explore aspects of the publishing business, including query letters, agents (or not?), self-publishing vs. traditional publishing, and the role of illustrators and editors. You will leave with a solid overview of the genre and plenty of resources and ideas for how to move forward with confidence and clarity.
