Novel Revision Series: Scene, Summary, & Dialogue - Remote!

The fully-realized dramatic scene is an essential building block of fiction. Contrary to the well-known dictum, however, most novelists find that they must use both showing and telling to create a clear and emotionally gripping experience for their readers. So how does a writer decide what to dramatize and what to summarize? How do you “tell” in an interesting way, and what are the ingredients of truly immersive dramatization? In this text-based seminar we’ll consult passages selected from contemporary and classic novels to draw a few useful conclusions, paying special attention to the use of dialogue, a central feature of most dramatic scenes, and one that offers the most direct window into the essence of your characters. 

This class will be hosted using live Zoom meetings! You will be able to participate in class via Zoom videoconference from wherever you’re most comfortable. All you’ll need is a laptop or a phone! About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting via Zoom–no need to download anything or sign up for Zoom in advance!
