This course aims to help writers absorb hybrid texts (primarily between poetry and nonfiction) along with generating work that bends genres. We’ll be studying work by Claudia Rankine, Maggie Nelson, Sappho, Safia Elhillo, Kamau Brathwaite and others to analyze and discuss how writers use prose, poetry, and language in new and innovative ways. This course will culminate in students creating work that works in multiple genres, along with developing a strong sense of how to use various texts to contextualize their work.
