Dear GrubStreet Community,

As I write my first note to you as GrubStreet’s new Executive Director, I’m reflecting on the power of storytelling to connect us, shift perspectives, preserve culture, and deepen our shared humanity.

GrubStreet embodies this truth as a literary home where writers of all backgrounds find community, craft, and courage. It’s a place where the act of putting words on a page is sacred, and where stories aren't just produced, but lived, shared, witnessed, and celebrated. At a time when our world feels increasingly fragmented — books are being banned, freedom of speech challenged, and arts and community spaces are losing vital funding — places like ours aren't just important. They're essential.

That belief in the magic of story brought me to theater stages, creative programs for young people, and classrooms where emerging artists find their voices. Now, it brings me to you and this beloved literary community.

For nearly twenty years, I've worked to build spaces where creative expression doesn't just happen — it transforms. I’ve seen how thoughtfully designed creative environments can build confidence, sharpen critical thinking, foster belonging, and help writers claim their voices in the world. As a nonprofit leader, educator, and artist, I've learned that the most impactful organizations don't simply deliver programs; they cultivate agency, community, and possibility. They honor every voice in the room. They understand that artistic excellence and equity aren't competing values — they strengthen each other.

I come to this work with deep respect for what you've already built and a strong commitment to what we'll create together. My leadership is rooted in listening, collaboration, and the belief that our best decisions emerge when we center the voices of those we serve. In the coming months, I look forward to meeting many of you at events and in classes, listening and learning from your experiences, and reading the brave, beautiful work you share.

The story we're writing together for GrubStreet’s next chapter will honor our deep roots while expanding our reach, protecting the deeply human essence of storytelling while thoughtfully embracing what's possible. My hope is that every writer who comes through our doors, whether virtually or in person, finds not just instruction, but encouragement, challenge, belonging, and the confidence to take their work to the next level.

I'm honored to serve as your Executive Director, and I'm eager to learn from you, work alongside you, and co-author this next chapter with intention, integrity, and joy.

With gratitude and excitement,

Kim Dawson Ohiomoba
