Dept. of Congrats Spotlight - Advanced Workshop Student: Yvette DeChavez

GrubStreet is thrilled to congratulate Yvette DeChavez! Her short story "Saint Gloria" was published in the current issue of American Short Fiction. She workshopped the piece in Naphisa Senanarong's Advanced Fiction Workshop.
We asked Yvette how her time at GrubStreet and in the Advanced Workshop class influenced her accomplishment:
"I signed up for the Advanced Fiction Workshop because I wanted to find community during the summer months when I usually hit a writing slump. I was generously awarded a scholarship, without which I wouldn't have been able to join. Thanks to the class, I got crucial feedback on an early draft of the story that eventually appeared in American Short Fiction. There was an entire element I removed from the piece because my instructor, Naphisa Senanarong, helped me see that the story was much stronger without it. After that, the narrative really started to come together. The workshop helped me stay focused and was truly one of the highlights of my summer."
