Class Description
Failing the test or tryout. A nasty argument with a parent. The death of a friend. A struggle with depression. That first kiss ... or more... It can be tricky to write about dark and deeply personal matters in a way that doesn't seem sentimental, preachy, self-indulgent, or raw, but in this workshop, you'll learn how. We'll look at work by exemplary writers whose tough and intimate personal narratives make their readers gasp, sniffle and feel what they feel. Trying in-class exercises, you'll practice how to tell your story, write a scene, show character and emotion. After our 4 hours together, you'll have started writing a personal story that matters to you, and rivets your audience. Writing notebooks will be available, but feel free to bring your own. For writers age 13 - 18 ONLY.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
