Class Description

This course is designed for writers of all levels who want to develop new work and explore the forms of memoir vignettes/flash memoir and personal essays for the purpose of storytelling. We will examine the structure of effective memoirs and essays in the short form (under 900 words), generate drafts based on a variety of writing prompts, and hone those drafts based on class feedback and personal reflection. Ahead of each class meeting, students will share memoir vignettes or short essays, and lead writer-centered workshops for verbal feedback, with the option to share short written feedback with classmates after the discussion.

Students will come away with a better understanding of the structure of flash memoir and short personal essay, as well as numerous works in progress, and an energized nonfiction writing practice.

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
