Class Description

Writers of children’s literature: push yourself out of your comfort zone! This course invites experimentation in the various sub-genres of literature for young people. Over six sessions, participants will explore five categories—young adult realism, middle grade humor, the picture book, historical fiction, and speculative fiction (i.e., fantasy and science fiction)—by examining excerpts from contemporary children’s books in class and composing short pieces in each style. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to work on one writing project continuously, which they may submit for workshop. Please bring 500 words of a current project to the first class.
