Class Description
This class is free and you do not need to pay or apply for a scholarship. Instead, to join this class fill out this form. DO NOT apply for a scholarship through the Grubstreet website.
In this course, we'll blur the lines between the real and unreal, and our memories and our imaginations. We'll examine examples of magical realism and discuss how the authors use elements of the fantastic in order to process their lived experiences. By the end of this course you'll have several story-starts which you can continue to develop into short stories or novels, and you'll receive feedback on your writing. We'll also do in-class prompts to practice making connections between the real and the magical, such as creating monsters out of fears, writing spells for different types of feelings, and creating imagined cities to understand our ideas of the ideal. This course is relevant for anyone who is drawn to the speculative, fantasy, and other magical elements and wants to use their own memories and experiences as a foundation for a story.
Families welcome. Coffee and snacks provided. Teens are welcome to attend with an older relative. We will provide simple activities to keep young children occupied.

Write Down the Street has a special focus on making the creative writing workshop more accessible to those who face challenges due to cost, language skills, lack of access to transportation, and other barriers. We believe that all voices must be spotlighted with the range and fullness they deserve.

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
