Class Description

In this class, we will spend six weeks honing our critical skills as readers and writers. We will learn how to turn empathetic, productive reading into specific, useful feedback for diverse texts and writers—and practice harnessing these skills to become our own best editors. Focusing on prose (both fiction and non-fiction), we will cover important elements of craft such as characterization, structure, pacing, and tension, and grow comfortable weighing on the socio-cultural contexts and implications of the works under discussion.

Through in-class exercises, homework assignments, and group workshops, we'll develop a keen understanding of how to generate and implement critical feedback, with a focus on productive revision and strengthening your own writing. Students will get an opportunity to bring in their own works-in-progress to be discussed.
Whether you'd like to be an all-star member of your workshop group or simply develop your capacity to read critically, you'll leave this class with a deeper understanding of how to give critiques and apply feedback in your own work as a writer, editor, teacher, or all of the above.

Please note: Class does not meet on Easter Sunday, April 21st.
