Class Description

Are you a teen interested in writing stories? Maybe you’re just beginning and want to try your hand at writing in a supportive but rigorous atmosphere, or maybe you’ve been sketching out characters and stories for years. Either way, this is the class for you!

In this course, we’ll focus on short stories and novels, looking at tools and techniques we can use to make our characters, worlds, and prose come alive for readers. Each week we will read and discuss published fiction, do brief writing exercises, and talk about the craft of writing. Students will have opportunities to share brief selections of their own work as well, offering and receiving feedback in a supportive workshop format.

In this class series, students will be encouraged to do work outside of class, building on in-class exercises and applying new techniques and feedback to their works in progress. Students should expect between 1-2 hours of writing outside of class each week. The result: At the end of six weeks, students will have a complete short story or set of chapters to call their own. For writers age 13-18 ONLY.

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
