Class Description

GrubStreet’s Teen Summer Writing Sessions offer a two-week deep dive into the world of creative writing, designed for teen writers to explore their storytelling potential. Led by 4-5 established Boston-area authors, each session is divided into small, genre-based cohorts where writers can focus on the genre they love—whether that’s fiction, poetry, science fiction, screenwriting, creative nonfiction, or a blend of creative genres. Throughout the program, teen writers will work on their craft in hands-on workshops, get personalized feedback, and collaborate with fellow writers. They’ll also have daily opportunities to connect across cohorts through group writing sessions, communal lunches provided by GrubStreet, and open office hours where they can discuss their work one-on-one with any of the instructors teaching during the session.

The vibe here is all about community and creativity, with weekly open mic sessions where writers can showcase their work and gain confidence sharing it with others. Guest author visits give teens the chance to engage with exciting voices in the literary world, while a special College and Professional Readiness Writing Day will help writers use their creative skills in everyday settings—whether that’s crafting a college application essay that pops, writing beautiful yet succinct emails, or the key tenets of shiny and impressive cover letters. Throughout the program, cohorts will cover topics such as the ethical use of AI in creative and academic writing, how to give effective feedback to their peers, and how to combat the mortal enemies of great writing: perfectionism and procrastination.

By the end of the two weeks, writers will walk away with a portfolio of polished work, new skills, and a fresh perspective on their creative future. Whether you dream of becoming a published author or just want to take your writing to the next level, the GrubStreet Teen Summer Writing Sessions provide the perfect space to unlock your voice and meet other writers who share your passion.

Registration Instructions:

  • Parents/guardians should register for the class using their OWN account in their OWN name. We will ask for teen information separately!
  • Click the red "ADD TO CART" button and follow the checkout instructions through our website. If you do not have an account, you will be able to make one easily. When making the account, please use the parent/guardian's name.
  • Once you have completed your registration, fill out the Teen Info Form. Your registration is not complete until this form has been filled out! Your teen is welcome to fill out this part directly. In this form, we will ask for:
    • Your teen's name and contact
    • Any requests for accommodations
    • Preference for their genre cohort. Genre cohort assignments will depend on the interest of the entire group, but we expect that each session will offer multi-genre, fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction cohorts. If there is enough interest, additional cohorts will be added in science fiction, and/or screenwriting. Even if we aren't able to build whole cohorts for a genre, f we know your top choice is sci-fi, but you are placed in a multi-genre cohort, your instructor will be sure to include plenty of sci-fi during your session.
    • Cohort placements will be shared one week before the session begins. Please remember that every single session this summer will provide a totally fantastic, completely immersive creative writing experience, and you *will* get to study the genre you're most interested in. Withdrawals made on the basis of cohort placement will not be eligible for a refund.
  • If the student is under 18, parents/guardians must complete this Teen Participation Permission Form. You only need to fill this form out one time, not for every class. Please complete it with the student's preferred name. If you cannot remember whether you have already filled it out, please email [email protected] and we will check for you! If you do not complete this form, your registrations could be voided and the cancellation policy will apply. If the student is 18, they can fill this form out themselves.
