Class Description

Create

On Thursday nights this fall, GrubStreet will hold space for 90 minutes of writing time for BIPOC writers. Instructor Yasmine Ameli will be present to guide the group and facilitate connections with other BIPOC writers. Feel free to come with a blank page, or bring your works in progress, and use this time how you like: chip away at a draft, work on submissions, or start new projects.

Each session will begin with an optional writing prompt to spark creativity, as well as an invitation to set a personal writing goal. We'll then spend five minutes in small breakout groups to share our intentions for the session with each other. From there, the majority of our time will be dedicated to uninterrupted writing time in an encouraging, low-stakes environment. We will end our time together with an opportunity to share—whether that be an excerpt from that session’s draft, a writing conundrum you’d like help troubleshooting, or a favorite book you think everyone should read.

BIPOC writers in all genres are welcome to attend. Weekly attendance is not required – come as you like, whenever having this space and time feels like it would be useful for you and your writing. Make sure to register before September 12th in order to participate.

Please note: This space will be held each Thursday evening between September 12th and December 19th, with the exceptions of October 3rd, October 31st, and November 28th.

Writing Roadmap: We've created a simple, goal-based writing roadmap to help you find the perfect GrubStreet course for your writing needs.

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
