Class Description

This class will take the traditional workshop format and apply it specifically to science fiction and fantasy. The workshop will contain the usual focus on craft, language, character, and plot, but it will also focus on story elements unique to genre, such as believability and consistency in world-building, the "hero" arc of the protagonist, genre tropes, invented languages, etc. Each class will consist of both a workshop discussion and a brief lecture and discussion of special topics in science fiction and fantasy. Short story writers and novelists alike are welcome, as are students new to the genre.

Writers will be expected to read 20-40 pages of material a week to prepare for workshop and discussion. On the first day of class, we will set the workshop schedule, but writers should come in looking to either workshop an existing piece or have a concrete idea that could be produced during the ten-week period.

Scholarships Format/Location

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
