Class Description

This workshop is part of GrubStreet's Manuscript Month, a programming deep dive into the publishing journey. Learn more about Manuscript Month here!

In this four-week close reading group, we will read and discuss Zadie Smith's challenging, engrossing historical novel The Fraud.

In this novel—at times harrowing, at times slyly comedic—Smith uses her masterful characterization and interest in anecdote, detail, and scene to play off an historical trial in mid-nineteenth century Britain that captured London's imagination: the complicated inheritance dispute by the arrival of a stranger who claimed to be a long-lost heir. Tied up in the trial is a midlist author forever overshadowed by Charles Dickens, and his unmarried sister who cares for him, a younger wife, a surprising love story, and an elderly Jamaican formerly enslaved person on whose testimony the entire trial hangs in the balance. Each week, we’ll focus on a small section of the book, slowing down to examine how scenes work on the page and study Smith’s techniques.

This group is designed for writers and readers who want to read more attentively and talk seriously about the craft of fiction. Participants should expect lively discussion, close textual analysis, and ideas for engaging with our own historical fiction projects.

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
