Class Description
With the rise of podcasting, it’s easier than ever for new writers and producers to create their own audio stories. Throughout this six-week introductory course, we will listen to fiction and documentary from around the world and learn how to use sound to make stories come alive. In the first two weeks, students will learn the basics of recording and editing audio using a Zoom H1N recorder and Hindenburg Journalist editing software. In week three, students will pitch their audio stories to the class and we’ll spend the last three weeks developing and workshopping those pieces. Students are free to work in fiction or nonfiction, but please note that we will be focusing on narrative-driven work in this course. By the end of the class, students will have a completed draft of a four minute story.
Note: Every student must have their own recording gear and editing software for this course. The instructor recommends that students new to audio consider the Zoom H1N, as it is an affordable and easy-to-use recorder, and she'll be teaching editing in Hindenburg Journalist, though students with some experience are free to use whatever recording equipment and editing software that they’d like.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
