Class Description

Are you ready to hear your words out loud? Want to bring your script to life with the help of professional actors in the Boston theatre community? In this collaborative workshop, you will have the opportunity to refine your full-length play as well as hone your craft skills. Each week, workshop will consist of a cold reading of one writer's play followed up by an extensive feedback session using the Liz Lerman method. After your play reading, you will be encouraged to make revisions or a plan of action for future rewrites. You should expect to leave this course with a polished script that is ready for submissions to development opportunities, festivals, fellowships, and/or grad school. A curated list of opportunities, and their deadlines, will be provided.

We will also cover best submission practices by breaking down supplement materials such as cover letters, statements of purpose, artist resumes, and development goals. Craft lessons will focus on elements such as character, dialogue, conflict, structure, pace and rhythm. With an eye of deconstruction, we will study the works of Martyna Majok, Hansol Jung, Katori Hall, Kristof Diaz, A Rey Pamatmat, and Tarell Alvin McCraney. This workshop is best suited for advanced playwrights who have at least one act, or thirty to forty-five pages of their play complete.

This class will be hosted using live Zoom meetings! You will be able to participate in class via Zoom videoconference from wherever you’re most comfortable. All you’ll need is a laptop or a phone! About 15 minutes before your class is scheduled to begin, you'll receive an email from your instructor with a link to join the class meeting via Zoom–no need to download anything or sign up for Zoom in advance!
