Class Description

Novel drafts can be rough and overwhelming, and while premature criticism may hinder, guidance to make the necessary emotional connection and arc is crucial. Our class focuses on developing key writing skills through exercises, craft discussions—such as character development, plot structure, and dialogue—and peer reviews that respect the novel's ongoing nature. In the final session, you’re encouraged to submit a portion of your work for the instructor's detailed critique. All genres are welcome.

Come to the first class with your novel's opening page prepared (double-spaced, 12-point font).

Scholarships Format/Location

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.

This class will take place in-person at our Center for Creative Writing in Boston's Seaport neighborhood.
