Class Description

Progress

This is a facilitated writing group designed for accountability and community building. An instructor will be present to facilitate and offer general guidance, but this is not a writing class, and it won’t involve craft lessons or in-depth feedback on your writing. Please check out our hundreds of writing class offerings for those features! These groups are a great option for anyone who’s at work on a project and looking to set aside some time each week to make progress on their writing and connect with others.

Traditionally, National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) has been specifically geared towards writers who want the challenge to finish a complete first draft of a novel in one month. However, NaNoWriMo has become a time that writers choose projects outside of novels to work on during the month November. Whether you want to crank out the first draft of a new novel, a memoir, a collection of poetry, essays, short stories, completing a revision, this one-month session is catered to all writers.

Writers will meet once a week to write in community during the month of November. The meetings will include NaNoWriMo Writing resources and readings that will be shared, along with ”write-ins” or quiet writing times where we will write together during the group sessions. Examples of resources include writer-process inspiration videos, creating project outlines, tips for Fast Drafting, & writing beyond NaNoWriMo. Upon signing up for this class, you will immediately receive instructions on how to set up your NaNoWriMo online portal, with prep materials to get you ready for the first session.

*This group is intended for writers who identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color).

Writing Roadmap: We've created a simple, goal-based writing roadmap to help you find the perfect GrubStreet course for your writing needs.

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
