Class Description

Are you ready to write your memoir? Whether you’re just at the beginning, or stuck in the middle, if you want to learn more about the memoir form and need a weekly deadline to keep you on track, this course is for you.

Each week, writers will learn a new aspect of memoir-specific craft and how to employ the literary techniques of memoir, including images, sensory details, metaphors, people as characters, narrative structure and chronology, and conflict. We’ll read excerpts from published memoirs for insight and inspiration––including from such authors as Audre Lorde, Teju Cole, Camilla Gibb, Sarah M. Brown, Hisham Matar, Carmen Maria Machado, Karl Ove Knausgaard, Jamaica Kincaid––and then put what we learn into practice through a series of prompts and exercises designed to help you generate new scenes. At the end of each week, you will write and submit a new scene from your memoir; you will also have the opportunity to workshop a scene or excerpt several times over the course of the class.

Students will leave the class with six new memoir scenes, and the motivation and tools to keep working on their drafts.

This six-week online memoir workshop is open to memoirists at all draft stages and of all experience levels.

*NOTE that while our handy dandy "Schedule" tab states a 6-7pm class time, there are actually no live meetings for this class! Weekly lessons and assignments open each Wednesday. Students will receive an invitation to Wet Ink, our online class platform, before 5pm on the first day of class.
