Class Description
In this six week writing workshop, we’ll read poetry and fiction that has reimagined fairy tale as commentary on contemporary society and private disenchantments. Authors will include Agha Shahid Ali, Joy Harjo, Joanna Fuhrman, Neil Gaiman, Elaine Equi, Wanda Coleman, and Alberto Ríos.
Participants will write poetry and/or short stories that incorporate familiar fairy tale characters and motifs in fresh and sparkling ways, using prompts—often based on poems and short fiction we’ll be reading—to rouse creativity. The course will follow the workshop model in which participants will discuss peers’ writing, which will lead to revisions. Guidelines will be conveyed on how to critique to produce constructive feedback.
This workshop is intended for beginning and intermediate writers who want to expand their writing practice, generate new poems and/or short stories, and develop self-critiquing skills that lead to refined revisions.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
