Class Description
The one promise I’ll make is that this will not be your run-of-the-mill creative writing course. Rather, it will be a six-week experience dedicated to one simple mission: devote three hours of your week to writing. Whether you are trying your hand at creative writing for the very first time or you’re looking for a spark to reenergize your creative flow, this class is for anyone looking to carve time from their day to spend on their art. Through a series of engaging writing exercises based completely on what you, the students, want to explore over the course of six weeks, we will mine our experiences and imagination for material. Be prepared to engage with text, visuals, audio, and movement. From there, we will bring what we find to life by constructing characters and settings, shaping vivid dialogue, zooming in on imagery, and exploring the nuances of voice. We will discuss the process of writing—the ups and the downs of it all—and work collaboratively to pinpoint strengths and weaknesses in our own work that we produce in class. Paying attention to craft and with an openness to inspiration, over the course of the six weeks we will read and discuss short pieces written by a variety of writers such as Bianca Stone, Jo Ann Beard, Nicole Sealey, Richard Siken, Sonya Larson, Danez Smith, KL Pereira, Mary Ruefle, Julia Alvarez, Natalie Diaz, and many more!
Please note: Class will not meet on Friday, February 1st.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
