Class Description

Change into your pajamas, make some tea, and join us online for a class devoted to jumpstarting (or reanimating) your writing! Through engaging writing exercises, we will mine our experiences and imagination for material and bring what we find to life on the page, constructing characters and settings, shaping vivid dialogue, creating imagery, and exploring the nuances of voice. The online edition of this course will facilitate deep discussion of craft, reflective responses on the process of writing, and a focus on building a writing community through a digital interface—to be pursued with self-discipline and at your own weekly place. Craft talks will be delivered through Grub’s WetInk interface; students can expect substantive feedback from the instructor and peers on their own writing and reflections on texts. With an eye on inspiration, we will read and discuss short pieces (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, etc.) by a variety of writers. Authors we may consider include (but are not limited to) John Edgar Wideman, Zadie Smith, Mary Szybist, Carmen Maria Machado, Maggie Nelson, Grace Talusan, Peter Orner, Tommy Orange, Lucia Berlin, Ocean Vuong, Nafissa Thompson-Spires, and Elif Batuman.

*NOTE that while our handy dandy "Schedule" tab states a 6-7pm class time, there are actually no live meetings for this class! Weekly lessons and assignments open each Wednesday. Students will receive an invitation to Wet Ink, our online class platform, before 5pm on the first day of class.
