Class Description

This course is an opportunity to jumpstart your poetry writing, discover a new community of writers, expand your portfolio, and polish a manuscript. While reading established and canonical poets such as Sylvia Plath, WB Yeats, and Frank O'Hara as well as experimental contemporary poets such as Mebvh McGuckian, Eleni Sikelianos, and Anne Carson, students will respond to a variety of prompts and in-class writing activities to bolster their poetic imagination and explore their linguistic reflexes.

Each class session will be spent on a short discussion of a celebrated poet followed by an intense workshop of student work. Students will be expected to be writing every week and will have the opportunity to workshop their work every week as well as receive written feedback from the instructor. This is an important course for a serious reader and writer of poetry, one that will give you a deeper mastery, pleasure, and knowledge of poetry/poetics. This poetry workshop is for both emerging and established writers.

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
