Class Description
You’ve started out on a first novel draft. Maybe you just have an idea, maybe you’ve written a few chapters, or maybe you've written a lot, or maybe you've got some rough notes and outlines–but have no idea how it all holds together or where to go next. How do you build your characters and approach your various settings? How do you preserve your voice as a BIPOC author and create unapologetically authentic characters? No matter where you are in the drafting process, this class can help!
Each week we will focus on one area of novel-specific craft–such as the pros and cons of outlining, scene building, plot, character development, preserving your voice as a BIPOC creator, and more–and generate new material each week through a series of prompts and exercises. We will also offer each other basic feedback and support on each other's writing and writing processes. We'll check in each week about our struggles and victories, and discuss strategies to keep ourselves motivated, both during class and after. You will come out of this course with new scenes, ideas, and craft skills needed to move forward. You will also build community with not only the instructor, but with other storytellers looking to make their story visions come to life on the page.
Please note: Class does not meet Monday, November 11th.
This class will take place using Zoom videoconferencing. After registering, a yellow Resources tab will appear in this section containing a link to join class. Please note that you will need to be logged into view the Resources tab.
Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
