Class Description
Come jump into the world of creative writing! In this survey-style course, each week will take us through a major creative writing genre and method, including poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction and essays, hybrid/cross-genre forms, and revision basics. Through readings, examples, generative exercises, discussion, and sharing, we will wander the different avenues of the wonderful world of writing.
Writers will come away with several pages of draft-stage work in different genres, plus a tool kit of foundational skills. In order to foster a safe space to explore, writing exercises will focus on the playful generative stage (as opposed to high-level revision) and weekly sharing/feedback will revolve around positive, encouraging ways to grow our work and discover ourselves as writers (as opposed to intensive formal workshopping.)
All levels and genres welcome! Beginners will get to know creative writing fundamentals in a safe, supportive space. Seasoned writers will be able to deepen their learning in various genres and generate new work.
*Please note that while our handy dandy "Schedule" tab states a 6-7pm class time, there are actually no live meetings for this class! Assignments and deadlines will be given by your instructor. Students will have access to the online class portal starting at 5pm on the first day of class. Instructions for logging onto the online portal will be emailed to registered students before 5pm the first day of class.
