Class Description
This generative workshop, designed for beginning writers of fiction and creative nonfiction, has a dual focus: teaching the fundamentals of how to “workshop”—how to substantively critique one another’s writing and your own—and how to revise. To that end, each participant will generate a new story or essay and revise it with instructor feedback. By the end of the course, you will have written a polished piece as well as gained a sense of how to take an idea from initial inspiration through rounds of thoughtful rewriting. This class is also designed to impart the basics of giving and receiving constructive feedback, preparing you for future creative writing workshops. In addition to in-class writing and workshopping, we’ll spend time discussing elements of craft—such as perspective, character, and scene—and reading work by authors including Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Alexander Chee, Jennifer Egan, and Alice Walker. This course is the latest in our ongoing initiative to re-imagine traditional workshop structures.
NOTE: In addition to our regular evals, we will be sending out a short survey to students at the end of the course so we can obtain feedback on how this new workshop structure went. As a way to thank you for your participation, we’ve discounted the class price 10%!
Class does not meet on August 15th.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
