Class Description

In this class, you can try your hand at creating comics—the language of graphic novels. We’ll practice turning your written words into a sequence of words and pictures. We will cover short-form and long-form narratives, from literary fiction comics to comics journalism. For inspiration, we’ll study the work of cartoonists Ebony Flowers (Hot Comb), Posy Simmonds (Tamara Drewe), Josh Neufeld (A.D.: New Orleans After the Deluge) and John Porcellino (King-Cat Comics and Stories).
In-class exercises will include writing fictional or non-fictional stories and separating elements in the pieces that can be drawn (in a simplistic manner) from thoughts, dialogue, and exposition that lend themselves to thought bubbles, speech balloons, sound effects and captions. Students will be invited to use a polished piece of their own writing in any genre and translate that piece into a comic. No previous art experience is needed.
