Class Description

This hands-on course is designed for writers who are in the early stages of crafting a memoir. In this six week course, we will discuss the structure of book-length memoir and key features of this genre including: finding your overarching theme or through-line; the power of voice in memoir and finding the tone of your story; telling the truth/writing about family and friends; the importance of internal and external conflict and tension in your story, and developing a story arc.

We will do several short writing exercises in class focusing on the following: identifying potential turning points; finding a potential opening hook or inciting incident; conveying emotional stakes for your protagonist, and playing with structure. Students will have the opportunity to share excerpts from these exercises 'on the fly' in class, but this is not a writing workshop.

We will also review short excerpts/examples from a variety of published memoirs. Please bring a brief one to two paragraph description of your project idea to share with the class to our first session.
