Class Description

This session is part of GrubStreet's Manuscript Month, a programming deep dive into the publishing journey. Learn more about Manuscript Month here!

Turning your idea into an actual book can be an arduous, scary, and uncertain process. With the proper support, however, discovering and writing your memoir or nonfiction book can be an exciting and worthy undertaking.

This four-week session is aimed at helping you discover the best vehicle for your story. Through targeted exercises and in-class writing, you can expect to generate passages that will bring your manuscript to life, with opportunities to share what you produce and get on-the-spot feedback. Each week, we’ll focus on a craft issue like stakes, scope, structural possibilities, and finding the heart of a story. There will be space for facilitated discussions on how to turn your ideas into narrative, and identifying tips and strategies for how to sustainably tackle a manuscript-length project.

This session is for those who feel ready to jump from concept to draft, and for those already on the way who are seeking more clarity and grounding in their drafting process.

Zoom Participation:

In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.

Zoom Accessibility:

You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
