Fiction II

Class Description

Whether your model is Morrison or Munro, Carver or García Márquez, your voice and narratives are unique. But you still need to practice, hone, and revise! Fiction II is designed to give intermediate writers who are already familiar with workshop the intensive review they need to make their stories deeper and sharper. Classes are primarily focused on constructive group critiques of student work, but will also include writing exercises, discussion of craft issues, and analysis of published stories. We may read work by Sherman Alexie, Shani Boianjiu, Ayse Papatya Bucak, Alexander Chee, Carmen Maria Machado, Curtis Sittenfeld, Shruti Swamy, Nafissa Thompson-Spires, Tony Tulathimutte, Claire Vaye Watkins
 and others. In addition to the class's comments, you will receive in-depth written feedback from the instructor. The goal is to write and revise two short stories, up to 20 pages each. The creation of self-contained narratives can be a useful challenge for novelists; workshopping novel chapters is discouraged.

Scholarship Information

Thanks to the excellent literary citizenship of our donors, scholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes. To apply, click the gray "APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIP" button. In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
