Class Description
Voice is one of the most mysterious and slippery elements of literary writing, and yet the most respected novels, stories, and poems stand out precisely because of their unique use of voice. What is voice and how do we find our voice as writers? In this class, you’ll be introduced to the essential tools of voice and start putting them into practice in your own writing. Each week, we’ll focus on a different aspect of voice, such as tone, syntax, cadence, and word choice/dialect, examining published excerpts from all genres (authors may include Jamaica Kincaid, Virginia Woolf, Zora Neale Hurston, Imogen Binnie, Javier Marias, Don Mee Choi, Ntozake Shange, Louise Glück, Carl Phillips, Lydia Davis, Victoria Chang, David Markson, and Brigit Pegeen Kelly) to develop a better sense of how it impacts the story, and discussing strategies for how to incorporate that aspect in our own work. You’ll put the tools you learn into practice through weekly exercises and writing prompts and you'll receive feedback from the rest of the class through the lens of voice. You’ll come away from this course with a better understanding of this story element, and a road map for how to apply it in your own writing.
*Please note that while our handy dandy "Schedule" tab states a 6-7pm class time, there are actually no live meetings for this class! Assignments and deadlines will be given by your instructor. Students will have access to the online class portal starting at 5pm on the first day of class. Instructions for logging onto the online portal will be emailed to registered students before 5pm the first day of class.

In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
