Class Description
The skill of craft and the cultivation of a writing practice are a marriage. A writer cannot have one without the other. Writers push full steam to learn craft, and often lose steam while writing. From the lens of a writer and editor, these sessions will encourage writers to go deeper and interrogate one's relationship to their writing practice. Writing prompts, readings, and resources lead to self-reflection, guidance, and tapping into that inner fire that can be utilized to identify gateways into a sustainable and generative writing practice. Writing resources will be provided to aid writers with identifying voice in the writing, as well as practical matters such as how to plan a generative writing schedule (which may not always be linear!). Authors we will explore include David Mura, Michelle Cliff, Ocean Vuong, Carl Phillips, Ruth Ozeki & Deepa Anappara.
This class opens up a space for BIPOC writers to write in a community that energizes the writing process, steering clear of traditional workshop pitfalls that can be inhibiting and often silencing. These sessions allow for BIPOC writers to experience comfort and safety express their fears, limitations, and challenges with the literary writing world.

Zoom Participation:
In our experience, the intimate nature of a writing workshop benefits from on-camera participation. Students are of course welcome to turn their camera off whenever they need to, but it is a community norm for cameras to be on most of the time. You can learn more about using Zoom here.
Zoom Accessibility:
You can enable closed captioning at any time during the meeting by clicking the CC button at the bottom of the screen. If you'd like to access the transcript after class, please make sure to let your instructor ahead of time that you'd like a copy.
