Class Description
You're familiar with the genre of creative nonfiction. But how do you carry an initial draft forward? How do you refine the choices you make as a writer? How do you get better at taking established techniques and making them your own? In this course, we’ll focus on advanced versions of strategies and ideas explored in Creative Nonfiction I, while also emphasizing revision and structure as tools for crafting more compelling nonfiction. You’ll examine and discuss published nonfiction works—personal essays, memoirs, lyric essays, narrative journalism, and more—to strengthen and hone your writing skills. We’ll look at the work of writers like Zadie Smith, Yiyun Li, Jo Ann Beard, Ross Gay, Maggie Nelson, Hilton Als and George Saunders. By the end of ten weeks, you will have practiced your writing style, workshopped what you’ve written, and focused on moving manuscripts from good to great. Each student will workshop two manuscripts of up to twenty pages each. This class is ideal for beginning writers who have taken Creative Nonfiction I or any previous formal writing workshop.

In order to be considered for a scholarship, you must complete your application at least one week before the start date of a class. Please await our scholarship committee's decision before registering for the class. We cannot hold spots in classes, so the sooner you apply, the better. Scholarships cannot be applied retroactively.
